Do I need a circuit breaker or fuse for my solar kit?

Why does LUX Solar include circuit breakers and fuses in our solar systems?  Although it increases the cost of our DIY solar kits slightly, there are very good reasons we include circuit breakers or fuses in our solar kits.

First, it is legal requirement for certain kits. Various regulations dictate the safety mechanisms required in solar set-ups, including:

  • AS/NZS 5003:2021 Installation and safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) arrays
  • AS/NZS 3004.2:2014 Electric Installations – Marinas and boats
  • AS/NZS 3001:2008: Electric Installations – Transportable structures and vehicles including their site supplies
  • AS/NZS 4509.1:2009 Stand-alone power systems

The exact requirements depend on the size of the system, where it will be applied, and the details of the other system components.

Circuit breakers are also a good idea because they protect your batteries from discharging in the event of a short circuit, which can kill your batteries.

And most importantly, circuit breakers protect your system (specifically cabling) from catching on fire.

LUX Solar has done the hard work for you and all LUX kits come with correctly sized circuit breakers and/or fuses to comply with regulations and protect you and your property. Check out our range of kits here!
